My team and I are assembling a suite of open source and Web 2.0 tools, built around the college's adoption of Moodle as our learning management system in 2009 and our addition of Mahara ePortfolios, to support Purchase's strategic goal of becoming a learner-centered institution with documented student learning. I've consulted with a number of SUNY and non-SUNY campuses on their adoption of Moodle, and am involved in several SUNY groups and initiatives, such as DOODLE (the directors of online and distance education for SUNY) and the FACT2 Teaching and Learning task force. I teach in and recently became coordinator for the Science in the Modern World program, a science seminar for non-scientists that is part of our first-year program. Marsha Stock,Ph.D., Emeritus Professor of Biology
SUNY Delhi, NY USA My background is in microbial ecology: the interactions between bacteria and algae in freshwater ecosystems. Before teaching at SUNY Delhi, I did research at the universities of Alabama and Oklahoma. I taught Microbiology at SUNY Delhi for 12 years before “retiring” 6 years ago. I started using my own web pages and learning management systems when they first appeared on the scene. Soon my courses were hybridized. I now offer three online upper level biology courses primarily for BSN students that focus on infectious disease, HIV/AIDS and public health. I also teach a wildlife course taken by a variety of students. As a retiree, I have the luxury of time to try out various online teaching tools and test them on my online students. I have found that while many online tools for teaching science are useful, their use sometimes interferes with teaching. I currently attempt to integrate sophisticated but applicable online tools into the online teaching/learning environment. |
