Are you interested in adding a service component to one of your
courses, but unsure about where to start? This informative panel of guest
speakers will share their best practices and service ideas and invite you to
share your ideas as well. Topics

Using
Moodle in Academic Advising Cheri Rossi & SUNY Delhi This presentation will showcase how the online BSN advisors at
SUNY Delhi capitalized on Moodle and its uses in advising, including
effective communication, appointment scheduling, and interactive degree
planning. Since Delhi's online students spend the majority of their time in
Moodle, it has proven advantageous to develop robust advisement resources
within this platform. The presenters will discuss best practices, give a
virtual tour of the BSN Advisement site, and share survey and registration
data supporting the use of Moodle in academic advising. |

Digital Learning Futures: Mind the Gap! By Steve Wheeler The future of education will be
greatly influenced by new and emerging technologies. Students are now
engaging with knowledge in new ways, creating and repurposing, as well as
consuming content. Teachers are now grappling with a vast array of choices
and possibilities, but often decisions are based on appearance rather than
affordance. In this presentation I will address the perceptual gaps between
intention and reality that are always present in education. These apply
especially to the choices we make when we adopt new technologies. There are
many differentials, some in the language used, some in the culture of
learning, others in the choice of technology. Some gaps can appear in the
psychological distances that occur when people learn using technology. Appropriate
technologies can reduce the distance, whilst inappropriate technologies may
amplify the distance. The psychological distance can be gender or age
related, or can reflect some other differential present in society. I will
highlight some of the new and emerging technologies and argue that for
education to truly harness the power of these new tools, we really need to
consider the human (social and psychological) issues as well as the technical
perspectives. These include not only skills and competencies but also the new
literacies that are evolving as we engage with knowledge making in the
digital age. Steve Wheeler is Associate
Professor of Learning Technologies at Plymouth University, in the Plymouth Institute of Education, in South West England. He
researches technology supported learning, eLearning, pedagogy underlying
social media and Web 2.0 technologies in education, mobile learning and
cyber-cultures. Steve has given keynotes and invited lectures in more than 30
countries across 5 continents. Steve is also the author of more than 150
scholarly articles, editor on various academic journals, and a prolific edublogger |

Using
technology-enhanced PLEs to manage mobile learning Sean Dowling Trinity
College Dublin, Ireland EDUWORKS Mobile learning episodes are embedded in the daily activities of
learners, occurring in different locations, with different people, using
different technologies and dispersed over time. This can lead to fragmented
learning. Using technology-enhanced personal learning environments (PLEs) can
help learners manage their mobile learning so that isolated, fragmented
learning episodes can form a coherent learning pathway. |
